Just wondering

warning, this will be a little ranting…

So I have horrible teeth, I mean it truly makes no sense. I brush at least twice a day plus flossing and will still end up with cavities and more. Others can go all year without flossing (only having flossed once a year when the dentist does it!) and walk away with no cavities. Not fair!

In addition to that, look at the prices of what things at the dentist cost. I ended up having to pay for a root canal and crown out of pocket last summer because my dental insurance through my parents (which has seriously low maximums anyway there isn’t a point) dropped me without telling us. Well, fast forward another year and here I am again in the same boat needing a root canal and a crown. I did get a savings card but none of the Endodontic offices take them. Why is dental insurance not like health insurance? And I searched for dental insurance but basically all of them had 18 month waiting plans on things like crowns… gotta love that.

Now, thank goodness I just got a job, but with costs of what this will cost me compared to my income? Seriously a sin!! How on earth is anyone ever supposed to get ahead when you are paying a fortune for dental care. I mean, to me it should be like health insurance. There are people that have genetically bad teeth and for those of us that have this problem it is not a fun time. I see how much my dad pays (guess where I get my teeth??) for dental work and thankfully he has the money… I do not.

Don’t even get me started on dentist office hours, the latest appointment they offer is 3:30, while the earliest is 8:00. I mean, I understand that they probably don’t want to work different hours etc. but I really wish, considering the majority of people work, there were additional hours at places like this. I mean, the doctor is no exception but since I am currently dealing with the dentist that is what I am thinking about right now :) I feel horrible having to take time off work when I just started for this stupid root canal but this isn’t something you can hold off of and once I get the root canal done, then I have to make another appointment to get the temporary crown and then yet another appointment for a permanent crown.

Yeah, I am not excited at all as it is way too high of percentage of the income I actually make.

  1. Ugh! Sorry you have to deal with this. I have hereditary problems with teeth too, but mine is premature bone loss. The insurance looks at my age and says I shouldn’t need the level of dental care that the dentists says. Look at the freaking x-rays! Seriously. But I have decent insurance overall, but, here’s the key. I have a good dental office who knows insurance and works with me to get things squared away. I know you need to take care of the root canal soon, but I’d consider finding a better office. It sounds like this place doesn’t cater to real people with jobs, etc. :(

  2. I am in the same boat. I floss and brush but yet I still have problems. Now I have to have 4 crowns because I guess I started grinding my teeth at night and fractured a few of my teeth. We did purchase Aetna, which is a discount dental program, but the cost still sucks. I feel for you:>

  3. oh dear. We moan about our NHS in the UK, but we are really very lucky. I had a root canal and crown and it cost me about $60. What I wanted to say though is that they’re ripping you off – there’s no need for the temporary crown! You can have the root canal, then just get the permanent crown, I did it all in one appointment. Challenge them on that as it means you paying twice…

  4. Oh my! It is terrible. I thought I had good teeth until my gums started receding and I have a new cavity every year. On top of that my daughter is 3 and she is on her second cavity. I take care of both kids teeth the same and they don’t eat junk, literally, no candy, crackers, juice, etc. My 6 year old has no cavities and my 3 year old is on her 2nd! Oh yes, no insurance also, I feel your pain!

  5. I totally get where you are coming from! I am a dental assistant have been for a long time, believe it or not when I have to have a procedure like a root canal it is upwards of $1000 (for a molar) because the dentist I work for does not do them, you would think that the Endodontist would give ya a discount since my doctor refers to them but we don’t! I get a break on the crown because my doc does those and I only have to pay lab costs but those run $200 and up depending on what kind of crown you get. One thing our office is doing at the beginning of the year is “Smile Benefits” it’s like insurance but not you get a discount of X amount of dollars on every procedure. I’m sure you like your dentist and don’t really want to leave but I would say something to him about making it more affordable for people that don’t have dental insurance.

If you are getting lots of cavities….and you drink pop that might be the reason for it especially Mountain Dew it’s the worst!! Even the diet is bad the acid eats away the enamel also get yourself ProEnamal tooth paste (Walgreen’s carries it) or have your dentist prescribe Prevident tooth paste. Also use Act fluoride rinse as well. It all helps!

  6. :( Bummer!! Husband and I have pretty good teeth so we ended up dropping our dental insurance because we were paying more into than we EVER would have gotten out of it. Ridiculous.

I’m sorry to hear about your teeth woes! I hope that everything ends up working out (especially the financial part).
