What was He thinking?

What was God thinking when He created lighting bugs (aka fireflies)?  Does anyone else ever have this thought as you see them zooming around on a hot summer night?  (Or maybe it is just me :).  I mean, it amazes me that the Lord made things in our world such as fireflies.  I am sure they serve some purpose but I like to think they are just there for our amusement.  Almost as if when God made the animals he thought, “hmm, what about making a bug that has a light on it’s bottom?  Everyone will enjoy that!”

I think of it often when I am sitting out on my back porch.  It is covered with furniture and we live out there in the summer.  (It is where I am blogging from right now).  Who doesn’t have memories of their childhood and chasing and catching fireflies, trying to keep them in jars.  To me when the fireflies come out it is summertime!

Fireflies also remind me to just slow down and relax.  We need to enjoy life.  Life goes by so fast with so many worries, so many frustrations.  Sometimes what we really need to do is just slow down and watch the fireflies.  Enjoy the summer.  Enjoy life.

Matthew 6:34-Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

  4. I love lightning bugs. I think God made them just so kids and adults alike have something to smile about at the end of a long summer day. Think about it. You can’t look at them and not feel happy. :) XOXO

  7. You reminded me of one of my favorite memories. After college graduation I backpacked through Europe with a buddy of mine and we stayed with his relatives in Italy who had a villa in San Remo. Yeah, it’s nice to have friends with rich Italian relatives. Their backyard looked over the Mediterranean and you could see Nice from there. We sat out there, on a bench, and the fireflies flickered all around.

It was one of those magical moments. I am sure you are getting lots of those now down under :-)
