Dog Car Seat & Tag

So here is Charlie.  He is a Havanese who is 14 weeks old.  He is my bosses (Don) new puppy.  Now this little ball of fluff is adorable.  He has needed a few things and I was more than happy to make them for him.

Here is a really cute picture of Charlie.  He is such a puppy and wants to chew everything.  I gave him a box top and he ended up sleeping in it next to his bed.  Pretty darn adorable.

Charlie needed a dog tag and since I handstamp silver I also handstamp dog tags out of nickel silver.  Much more durable for dogs :)

So a few years ago Pancake got a booster seat for the car.  I got it for free and it works great for keeping her in the car as she tends to move around a lot, not safe!  The only issue with the seat is that it does not have a lot of padding.  So I made a whole cover for it.  Anyway, not that I have been bringing her to work with me Don has seen the car seat and ordered the same one for Charlie.  Don wanted Charlie to have a cover for his booster seat as well so he picked a more masculine style than Pancake has but I think it turned out pretty well!

Why you should adopt a senior dog

So I am very outspoken that I think people should rescue dogs.  There are so many rescue websites (petfinder and adopt-a-pet are just two of them) and so many smaller rescue websites that show pets that are at shelters and humane societies all around the country.  There are so many wonderful animals at shelters that may not get a chance to have a home.  Sadly, many of these animals were abandoned by no fault of their own.  Their owners decided they don’t want them anymore, or maybe their owner died or got a divorce, or is allergic.  There are so many reasons and most of them have nothing to do with the dog being mean.

Okay, but back to my main point.  There are many older dogs on these websites (and by older I mean 5+) that people tend to gloss over.  Most people are wanting puppies or younger dogs.  Well, if that was the case and I had followed through on that I would never have adopted Pancake.  Now, if you have read my blog for any amount of time you can see how attached I am to Pancake (and how adorable she is!).  I adopted Pancake 4 and a half years ago and she is still my little shadow.  Yes, she is older but she still just wants to be right by her Mama at all times.

I rescued Pancake from a puppy mill situation.  They knew she was older but besides her being between 5 and 8, they had no idea.  The vet said she was probably more along the 8 year old range based on her eyes and her teeth.  Poor Pancake was mistreated horribly and the vet also said if I had not rescued her and got her in for surgery she wouldn’t have made it another month due to the cancer she had inside her.  She was definitely a sad case!

But… she is definitely a trooper!  By adopting an older dog (1) I didn’t have to deal with her chewing up my shoes or papers (I mean, she barely has any teeth but still :), (2) she was basically potty trained and she knows to go to the door, (3) I knew how she would be when I met her.  She wasn’t a puppy that was going to change once she got older.  She was already older and just a happy dog (despite her circumstances!), (4) she doesn’t require constant attention like a puppy does.  She does like to be where I am but I am not constantly having to throw balls or grab ropes (in all honestly, she doesn’t really play with toys.  She has never figured out what they were really there for :), (5) They can be complete couch potatoes!  As I type this Pancake is just lying in her bed beside me.  They are so easy going and just happy to be where you are but not need your constant attention.  (6) They are thankful.  This may sound ridiculous but Pancake knows I rescued her.  My family rescued a Chow when I was younger and he was 4-5 and he knew we saved him.  It is like they just can tell.  (7) You can still get purebreds and “designer” dogs.  Actually, by adopting an older pet you know what they are going to look like.  (8) Senior pets are great for senior citizens!  Their energy levels are less and they are excellent companions!

I really couldn’t imagine not having ever adopted Pancake.  I know one day she won’t be here with me but that is the same with every thing that lives.  She is a little trooper and is so happy and joyful that she just makes me happy.  After all she went through in her little life she still has so much love to give!

Synchroblogging & Pancake

So one of my oldest friends Courtney sent a tweet about an idea she had about synchro-blogging where we all blog about the same topic at the same time. Now technically the week is over and I will be late linking up but it has been a busy, busy week and better late than never. :) The idea behind the synchro-blogging is that there is a set topic and sometime during the week you write about it, just like a linky party.

So here is Pancake (you can also notice her in the header) and she is my little shadow. I rescued her from a horrible puppy mill situation a little over 2.5 yrs ago. When I adopted her she had spent her entire life (estimated at 5-7 but we really have no idea) in a cage. I brought her to the vet and spent a fortune for her having surgery. When I got her spayed it was discovered she had cancer inside her little body and tumors. The vet said if I had not rescued her and had surgery she would have been dead within a month. She also had to have most of her teeth pulled because she had never been taken care of.

Even though she didn’t have the best start to life she is truly a joy to have. She snuggles with you, loves to wiggle her butt in the air, loves to play with toys (it took 2-3 weeks for her to figure out what they were) and it took a year to teach her to trust and walk on a leash. Although, I have had to be really patient with her she makes everyone she meets really happy when they see how her little tail won’t stop wagging.

I mean, how adorable is she? Too cute right?

Pancake’s new booster seat

Okay so I will probably look like the biggest dork for this (and I’m okay with that!) but I recently received a pet booster seat for Pancake. When I bring her in the car she insists on sitting in my lap and it is really difficult (not to mention dangerous) to drive. So when CSN asked me if I wanted to do a review/giveaway I knew I would because I saw this awesome pet booster seat. She loves it and is able to relax. Normally she is a little scared about riding in the car. This keeps her secure and happy.

Now the only problems with this booster seat is 1. it doesn’t provide a lot of padding and 2. the cover is orange. I like orange but I wanted something a little prettier.

So I spent all night coming up with something much cuter.

What dog doesn’t need a personalized pillow to go with their padded (and adorable!) booster seat?!? I just bought one of the kid/travel pillows and whipped up a quick pillowcase and added the paw print with extra fabric.

Crazy? Just a little! But it is much safer to have a dog secured in some way in the car and it just had to be cute and comfortable! Now, the only thing left is to fix the orange on the pockets and put some pink bias tape on it to make it all match 100%!

p.s. CSN stores gave me a credit for anything in their store for a review & giveaway going on over at my new blog 2 Girls & Their Pups. Feel free to head over and enter!
