Unglued Devotional {book review}

I was recently sent Unglued Devotional by Lysa Terkeurst to review.  It is a 60 day devotional that is a companion to Lysa Terkeurst’s book Unglued.  It is separated into 60 days with a different thought for each day.  Each devotional is short and can be read in under 10 minutes making it the perfect devotional to keep in the car, or read at night.  The thoughts each day are things that we all feel at one time or another.  From God having a beautiful plan for me to the reason I can give grace is because I so desperately need it.

It is organized in topic (the chapter title), scripture, thought, her words and then prayer.  I do wish there were more scripture references in the devotional and there may be in the book by the same name.  I have not read that book but I may pick it up to read to see how it goes with the devotional.  This book is an excellent companion to your daily quiet time.

I really appreciate how her thoughts are thoughts that every women has.  The style of writing is easy to read and to understand, simple but it works so well.

20,000 Days and Counting [Book Review]

I devoured this book in less than an hour! This is a book I want to buy for every single person I know. When you read the praises in the front of the book you will think they are lying because they are all about how your life won’t be the same and you’ll be changed but after reading the book I can guarantee without a doubt they are 100% correct. Andy Andrews lead me into a short and sweet book that said everything perfectly about instead of counting DOWN your days count them UP, really living each day as it was your last because one day it will be. There are so many things that can be said about this book, so many amazing statements that were made that I starred and underlined. Such as, “I know I will die but I do not know how long I will live,” and “remember that it’s the little things that add up to the big picture.”

I think what stood out to me most while reading this book is that so much of life is about changing your perspective. He talks about how if you knew it was your last day on earth you would probably spend most of it trying to figure out what to do so you could make it count, and then most of it would be wasted. So everything you do should be looked at from an eternal perspective. And then how you may be mad that it is raining on your last day because you wanted sunshine but think about how amazing the rain is, how it makes things grow, the smell of rain that cannot be copied. It is all about the perspective you have as you go through each day. Count each day up, each day you are allowed to live.

I promise you that if you spend an hour reading this book that will be time well spent that you will carry what you read with you and you will want to read it over and over again.

I have been alive for 10,197 Days, what about you?

The Butterfly Effect [Book Review]

The Butterfly Effect is an idea that a butterfly can flap it’s wings setting air in motion, that could eventually cause a hurricane on the other side of the planet. Over time the Butterfly Effect has been evolved to engage with the first movement of anything, including people.

The book begins describing the act of Colonel Chamberlain in the Union Army and how his act of charging the Confederate army at Gettysburg won the war for the Union. If the Union had never won the war then the US would be a MUCH different place. If the US was a much different place many other things throughout history that have happened would have vastly different outcomes.

Every move we make matters. While this book is short it is a book that everyone should own. It should serve as a reminder that no matter how small you are or how insignificant you feel what you do matters. What you do today, did yesterday, do tomorrow can change people’s lives and change history in ways you can never imagine.

This is an amazing book. I am planning on buying it for me and for others as gifts. You can buy it at Lifeway, Amazon and other book stores.

DISCLOSURE: I was provided a free download of this book from Thomas Nelson to review it. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are purely my own.

The Edge of The Divine by Sandi Patty

I just received The Edge of The Divine by Sandi Patty. I have not read any books by Sandi Patty but I will definitely be reading some now. The book began by talking about Sandi’s struggle through her weight loss and her struggle with her weight. At first I was a little nervous that the entire book was going to be about her weight loss but my first thoughts were definitely wrong.

While the book did discuss her struggles with weight loss it was much more than that. This book is perfect for this point in my life. One of my favorite quotes in the book was by her friend Gene Anderson and he said “If you’re not living life on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.” There are healthy risks we should take in this life and if we don’t take them we are just wasting the space. We should live life at the edge and God provides for us to be able to do that! Not only does she talk about edges but also briar patches where we can end up after we want God to send us somewhere else. I love how she uses the terms of “edges” and “briar patches” to get us to see things in new ways. Her book told me what I already know, how God puts us in the right places and His plan is different than ours but it is a reminder I constantly need and she put it in new and interesting terms.

I love books that I feel like getting my pen out and underlining and writing my own notes in and this book allowed me to do that. I loved the Bible verses at the beginning of the chapters and throughout, the notes for discussion at the end allow the book to be used for a small group study and my mom is going to bring it up to her small group as something to read next time.
