Comparison Steals Joy

Dontletcomparisonstealyourjoy

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

is attributed to Teddy Roosevelt.  Whether he said it or someone else did, it is absolutely true.  We all are looking for joy, always.  It is one of the Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22- “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”).  I find it interesting that joy is something we are all searching for.  It was actually my word of the year for last year, I wanted to be more joyful.

Why do we have such a hard time finding it? Why do we have a hard time being joyful?  I honestly believe comparison plays a big role, a bigger role than we think, in why we can’t always find the joy we are looking for.  Think about it.  If you are constantly comparing your life to others, noticing why they have things you don’t or why it seems like they do things better than you do, how can you possibly find the joy you are looking for in what you have? (and when I am saying you, I am also meaning me of course).  We are bombarded with people’s ‘perfect lives’ on facebook, instagram, twitter, etc. It is hard to be joyful with what we have.  The funny thing about it is the people you see as the perfect ones are probably having just as much trouble finding joy as you are because of what they see.

Comparison is really a trap.  It makes us unable to see clearly all the blessings that God has given us in our lives and all of the fullness we have in it.  Instead we are looking at everything that everyone else has.  Comparing ourselves only causes us to be upset or not happy, and therefore not have joy.  We cannot be joyful and envious at the same time, they don’t go hand in hand.  Joy is a Fruit of the Spirit and Envy is a sin.

Galatians 6:4-5- “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” (NIV)

Just because we look at someone else and see what they have doesn’t mean God is not giving to us abundantly.  We need to trust Him that He knows what is best for us and gives us what we need.  and He does.  We think because our life doesn’t always look how we want it to look then we are failing, but we aren’t.  We will never find joy or contentment in comparing our lives to someone else’s, especially when we can never know the 100% truth of their life.  What about the saying, “The grass isn’t always green on the other side of the fence?”  I am pretty sure people look at our lives and think what we think of theirs.

So how can we go about being joyful and content with what we have?  It isn’t going to happen because your circumstances change.  It is going to happen because your thoughts and  your heart change.

1 Timothy 6:6-7- “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

What is going to happen once you get what you think you want? What you think will make you joyful? If your heart hasn’t changed you will just want more.  If we can’t be content with where God has us and what God has us with now, we are not going to be content with more.  Our contentment and our happiness is not dependent upon our circumstances but is dependent upon our trust in the Lord.  The main thing we can do is choose to be joyful, choose to be happy, no matter what the circumstances.  It will take effort, and it won’t always be fun but you’ll find that the more you choose joy, the more you are joy.  Contentment is something you have to learn.  You have to stop comparing.  I want to show the Lord I am joyful with what He has given me now, and if He gives me nothing else, I will still choose Joy because of what He has done for me.  That is how we are to choose joy.

Another thing you can do is start focusing on the blessings that God has placed in your life.  I have started doing #100happydays on instagram.  The concept is simple, you take a picture each day of something that makes you happy.  By the end of the happy days you will have 100 pictures of happiness for you to look at.

And probably the best thing you can do?  Pray.  Pray for contentment in what you have, pray for God to help you to stop comparing your life to others, help for you to see the joy that you have in your life.  Help you to CHOOSE JOY in all circumstances.

Comparing Apples to Oranges

So I have had multiple blogs over the years. This one has always been my main one and the others were more just venting grounds for me. Anyway, I found one on a post that I wrote on June 9, 2010 and I felt like it was pretty good so I wanted to share it. I have no idea where I got it, what I was thinking at the time or anything else. Does anyone else do that when they go back and read blog posts? I do all.the.time. Anyway, going back in time to 2010….

————————
Why do we (and when I say we I mean me but I really think, hope, I am not the only one who does this) spend so much time comparing our lives to those of the people around us? I mean why am I looking at the person down the street and comparing my life to their life? The things they do, when they do them and how they do them? Am I not my own person? Are we not all our own persons? We obviously know the answer to that is a big fat yes and so then why do we spend so much time comparing?

It hit me today as I was working and beginning to compare in my head again that to compare my situation to other people’s situations is truly like comparing apples to oranges. Not only do I not know their entire situation (one can never know the entire situation of someone else and how they feel about it) but we are two completely different people. What is right for one person may not be right for another. Not only that but I can’t see inside, I don’t know how that person feels. I may look at someone’s situation and want it so bad but I have no idea what troubles they may be going through on the inside. And while I hope that they aren’t going through any troubles there are probably things they wish they could change about where they were.

I think if I would spend my energy that I use to compare just having fun and enjoying where I am right now life would be so much different. Thought of the day and definitely something that I am going to work towards. When I find myself comparing I need to take a step back and realize, apples and oranges cannot be compared… nor should they be!

[Blessed]

Blessed… we hear it all the time and we say it all the time but what does really being blessed mean?  Do we overuse the word Blessed (I don’t think so), do we have the wrong idea of what it means to be Blessed (maybe).

bless·ed

adjective
1.  consecrated; sacred; holy; sanctified: the Blessed Sacrament.
2.  worthy of adoration, reverence, or worship: the Blessed Trinity.
3.  divinely or supremely favored; fortunate: to be blessed with a strong, healthy body; blessed with an ability to find friends.
4.  blissfully happy or contented.

According to dictionary.com – because that is where you are supposed to find definitions… :)

I think, as humans we sometimes get narrow minded and think we are only blessed if we are the last one, blissfully happy or content, but that isn’t true.  We are blessed just by being Children of God (1 John 3:1-See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him).

I think we have our definition of what it means to be blessed confused sometimes.  We are blessed just for being alive.  We are blessed just for being given one more day to live by our Heavenly Father.  He doesn’t owe us anything, not a new car, a new job, more money, and definitely not another day.

The Bible is full of verses about blessings, blessings God gave to His followers and promises of blessings for us.  God loves to bless us in many different ways and He blesses us in little ways and in big ways!  I tend to think getting another day to live is a big one but also smelling the flowers, seeing a rainbow, the smell after a spring rain… all of those are God’s little blessings that He gives to His children because He loves us.  There are so many verses about God blessing His people.  Here are some of my favorite but I know there are many, many more…

Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Matthew 5:2-12- “and he began to teach them.  He said:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.  Blessed are the merciful, =for they will be shown mercy.  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.  Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Just know that you are blessed just by being a Child of God.  One of my favorite songs is 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) by Matt Redmond.  Check it out.  Bless the Lord, oh my soul, oh my soul, worship His holy name.  Sing like never before, oh my soul.  I’ll worship your Holy Name.

Just a side note, I hope this posts makes sense.  It was something that was weighing on my heart to write and so hopefully I got it across in a somewhat intelligent manner :)
