He is Risen
[Blessed]
Blessed… we hear it all the time and we say it all the time but what does really being blessed mean? Do we overuse the word Blessed (I don’t think so), do we have the wrong idea of what it means to be Blessed (maybe).
bless·ed
adjective
1. consecrated; sacred; holy; sanctified: the Blessed Sacrament.
2. worthy of adoration, reverence, or worship: the Blessed Trinity.
3. divinely or supremely favored; fortunate: to be blessed with a strong, healthy body; blessed with an ability to find friends.
4. blissfully happy or contented.
According to dictionary.com – because that is where you are supposed to find definitions…
I think, as humans we sometimes get narrow minded and think we are only blessed if we are the last one, blissfully happy or content, but that isn’t true. We are blessed just by being Children of God (1 John 3:1-See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him).
I think we have our definition of what it means to be blessed confused sometimes. We are blessed just for being alive. We are blessed just for being given one more day to live by our Heavenly Father. He doesn’t owe us anything, not a new car, a new job, more money, and definitely not another day.
The Bible is full of verses about blessings, blessings God gave to His followers and promises of blessings for us. God loves to bless us in many different ways and He blesses us in little ways and in big ways! I tend to think getting another day to live is a big one but also smelling the flowers, seeing a rainbow, the smell after a spring rain… all of those are God’s little blessings that He gives to His children because He loves us. There are so many verses about God blessing His people. Here are some of my favorite but I know there are many, many more…
Ephesians 1:3- Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Matthew 5:2-12- “and he began to teach them. He said:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, =for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Just know that you are blessed just by being a Child of God. One of my favorite songs is 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) by Matt Redmond. Check it out. Bless the Lord, oh my soul, oh my soul, worship His holy name. Sing like never before, oh my soul. I’ll worship your Holy Name.
Just a side note, I hope this posts makes sense. It was something that was weighing on my heart to write and so hopefully I got it across in a somewhat intelligent manner
[Redeemed]
“Redeemed”
Big Daddy Weave
Seems like all I could see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last
Then You look at this prisoner and say to me “son
Stop fighting a fight it’s already been won”
I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I’m not who I used to be
I am redeemed, I’m redeemed
All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear You whisper, “Child lift up your head”
I remember, oh God, You’re not done with me yet
I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I’m not who I used to be
Because I don’t have to be the old man inside of me
‘Cause his day is long dead and gone
Because I’ve got a new name, a new life, I’m not the same
And a hope that will carry me home
I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, ’cause I’m not who I used to be
I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, yeah, I’m not who I used to be
Oh, God, I’m not who I used to be
Jesus, I’m not who I used to be
‘Cause I am redeemed
Thank God, redeemed
#26 Acts of Kindness
So I don’t know if you have seen the campaign that has taken off started by Ann Curry about doing 26 Acts of Kindness for the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. I think this is a fabulous idea.
Of course, some people are up in arms and asking why are we just doing this now, etc. And while, I definitely do not think it should take a tragedy for us to act and be nice to each other; I do think doing this can only help all of us. I think this may inspire us to take time each week to be doing random acts of kindness for others.
We all deal with tragedy differently and I am not even going to try to understand how the families and those directly affected feel. I know all of us are just trying to make sense of something that in all honestly probably will never make sense. It just won’t. So I think taking time to remember what is important, and helping others out will help all of us.
A Facebook Page has been started, 26 Acts of Kindness and when you tweet out there are hashtags #26acts & #26actsofkindness.
I do want to say that anyone using this tragedy for their own means, to gain followers, etc. is absolutely despicable and horrible. I could not imagine why they would feel that is appropriate BUT, I also feel like getting the word out about this is truly honoring those innocent victims, and those brave teachers and administrators who lost their lives. It recognizes the brave firemen, policemen, detectives, emergency personnell and others who risked their lives running into the scene where they had no idea what to expect or if they would potentially be shot at. There are so many heroes to come from this tragedy, and I am sure they would tell you they are not a hero but were just doing what they would hope you would do. They deserve to be honored.
Now, these are just ones I have come up with. I am sure there are lots more! One thing I think you should do no matter what Acts of Kindness you do is include a note with the hashtag or in memory of the victims. I am sure anyone who is a recepient of a random act of kindness would want to pass it on.
- Hand out cards with a few dollars in them to random strangers
- Put quarters in the candy machines
- Leave giftcards/notes on cars
- Beds/towels/food to an animal shelter
- Leave a treat in someone’s cart
- Random thank you notes to people who have made an impact on your life
- Food to a neighbor
- Visit the sick/elderly
- Cookies to the firestation
- Donate to a cause
- Pay off someone’s layaway for Christmas
- Toys to the hospital
- Pay for car behind you at drive-thru/Starbucks
- 100% tip at a restautant
- Buy some candy and attach a nice note
- Donate airline miles
- Christmas cards or packages to those serving overseas
- Writing Thank You Notes to the First Responders (addresses here)
- Pay someones meter
And there are SO many more! I wrote this more as a help to me as well to remember things to do, not just now but always. Imagine if everyone did 26 Acts of Kindness or even in normal day to day just one act a week… how many millions of Kindness acts would we accomplish.
