How about Popeye & Olive Oyl?

My sister informed me on Saturday that her and her boyfriend were wanting to be Popeye and Olive Oyl for Halloween and could I make their costumes. Of course I love making costumes so I said yes. I find out she needs them by Friday because they have a party on Saturday. Okay, I can do that. Anyway, I spent all day today making them. What do you think??

[I realize it would be better if I actually had people in the costumes but they are in Knoxville for school and will be in town next weekend. But I promise to post pictures after the party!]

To make her costume I found a skirt and turtleneck @ Goodwill. I shortened the skirt and added the yellow ruffle. I cut off the turtle neck and applied the collar I made out of felt. I then added felt to the sleeves. She was easy.

For Popeye I found a black button down @ Goodwill and blue pants. I cut off a lot of the top of the button down and hemmed it over. I made the collar out of fat quarters (on sale @ Joannes this week) and then added satin ribbon for the embellishment. I only attached the small front of the collar to the shirt so that it could all sit right. I then took out all the buttons, sewed it down the front and then added the navy buttons. I also have a yellow belt but I had to spray paint white nylon belt material yellow and it is still drying.

I found the sailor hat @ Target for $5.40 and I still need to make a spinach can & pipe. :) For under $40 they definitely have a custom costume set!!

I ♥ Freezer Paper

So I saw Susan @ Living with Punk’s idea about the “i heart my state shirts” and knew I had to do it for “my kids.” I went to Target (favorite store!) and bought cute tees for A & C and then just regular t-shirts for W & E.

I LOVE how they turned out. You print out your state online & then make a pattern using freezer paper (best invention ever!). Then get your fabric paint and start painting. I also decided to outline the states in another contrasting color.

For C, I also switched out the sleeves on her shirt (very easy to do, I’ll put up a tutorial eventually!) because she is just so upbeat and it fits her personality. Love her facepaint that E did? She also had purple hair. :)

Obviously, a little more “boyish” for W. Instead of the heart I used silver iron-on studs and made a circle. I love how they turned out and plan on making more of them!
