Today’s featured crafter is Shannon from Shannon Makes Stuff. This is such an easy and affordable gift you can make for anyone (or even for yourself!). How perfect would this be for a hostess gift filling a casserole dish with food? Or using the instructions to personalize a vase? The options are pretty much endless!
To make the glass etching you need to have a vinyl decal and etching cream. The vinyl decals can be purchased from Shannon (yes she has a shop too!) and she makes the letters backwards and cut out so that it is perfect for getting on the bottom of the pan. You have to remember that if you put it on the bottom, it will be the opposite on the top. Or if you don’t want to buy a vinyl decal you can use contact paper and make your own stencils.
The etching cream can be expensive and you can buy it from your craft store (Joanne’s doesn’t carry it, I find it at Michaels). It costs $34.00 for a big bottle or $15.00 for a little bottle. But each bottle can do A LOT!!! So you will use it for more than one project. Oh and to save you time and money. DO NOT BUY THE GENERIC. It costs around $5.00 but it doesn’t work, I tried it. And don’t buy the sand etch sand blaster. It doesn’t work either.
Now for the Instructions: Step One. Get your vinyl piece. Yes it looks like this:
Step Two: Clean your pan with glass cleaner. Put the vinyl decal on the back of your pan, not the inside, like this:
Step Three: Get the really expensive stuff and using a crappy paint brush paint on a nice coat. Make sure it is not too thin but don’t waste it, it costs a lot remember. Leave it on for 30 minutes. No less, but it’s okay if it’s more. It puffs up. Kind of like hydrogen peroxide on a cut. Put it on just like this:
Step Five: Wash the etching stuff off and peel off the vinyl, making sure to get the insides of your letters. It doesn’t look like it’s done, but trust me it is.
Step Six: This is what it looks like. As it dries it gets lighter and easier to see. Here is is from the back, see you can see it now…I told you it would get lighter.
These make great Enrichment Night Projects, Super Saturday Projects, Christmas and Wedding gifts, and are great for teachers…fill it with a cake mix and frosting and tie a bow around it.
Thanks so much Kristen! It looks great! Your new pet blog looks like a lot of fun as well!!! Thanks again!
