“Leadership Lessons, Avoiding the Pitfalls of King Saul” [Book Review]

“Leadership Lessons, Avoiding the Pitfalls of King Saul<” is different than other leadership books you may have read as it is about Saul who failed as a leader. Most leadership books focus on people like Lincoln and others who were excellent leaders. This book begins the first chapter with explaining why should you study a failed leader. They show how Saul messed up and why we shouldn’t do that. I find it particularly important how in the first few paragraphs of the book the authors explain that while what Saul does sounds extreme they are not so far removed from how people in the church act today.

The book goes through different things Saul failed to do that good leaders should do. It is organized into chapters such as “Saul Failed to Think Before He Spoke” and ” Saul Failed to Lead the People, but Let Them Lead Him Instead”. Then throughout the chapter it talks about what Saul did and using Biblical Wisdom to show why that is not how leaders should behave with Scripture to reinforce.

A really nice thing at the end of each chapter is a Group Discussion and Personal Reflection Guide. This is a great way to reinforce what you learned in the chapter whether you are reading it by yourself or with someone else. It starts with Group Discussion questions but you could easily answer those by yourself if only you were reading it.

This is a great book for businesses, churches and groups of leaders to do together. The book encourages us to look at the major pitfalls that leaders can run into (not just Saul, all of us) and why and how we can behave differently.

My P-R-A-Y-E-R journal [Book Review]

The way this prayer journal is set up is each day goes through P-R-A-Y-E-R.  It is a great concept but doesn’t translate really well into the book format.

Praise and Thanksgiving

Repentance through Confession

Ask (for needs of others and self)

Yield to the Father

Examine and

Reflect

The day starts with a Bible verse and then moves into the P-R-A-Y-E-R.  All of the scripture is written in KJV.  So underneath each P-R-A-Y-E-R there is the same Bible verse each day with maybe a sentence or two extra.

Maybe it was because I had an ebook but the Prayer Journal was really difficult to follow.  I didn’t think there was any real information or knowledge that would make it a book, more just a place to write your prayers down in.  Some days under “Ask” have different people to pray for such as Church People, Government People, Missionaries and other things regarding who you should prayer for.

Now, this book was not what I was expecting at all.  As I mentioned it may be because it was an ebook and so maybe the format in the actual book would work better but for an ebook it does not work at all.  The scripture is nice and prayer is very important but I find just writing my prayer in a notebook works better than this format.

Victim of Grace: Book Review

Victim of Grace by Robin Jones Gunn is a story of how God’s Goodness is present in each and every situation, whether we are able to recognize it or not.  Robin shares stories from her life regarding her dreams and goals and how even when God didn’t give her what she wanted He was faithful, all in His timing.  One of the things that stood out to me happened within the first few pages and it really spoke to me.  Robin is telling a story to a friend and the way she tells it makes you think something different is happening than what really is happening.  It shows us that God sees the full picture while we may only know bits and pieces.  God knows our dreams and if He chooses to they will be fulfilled, although they may be in ways different than we first expected.

I couldn’t put the book down as Robin portrays God’s goodness and grace in such a fabulous way.  She weaves stories from her own life with stories from the Bible to show that God always comes through and His goodness always prevails.  She didn’t shy away from her difficult stories or from other people’s difficult stories but told them in such a way that you could see how God worked in everything, for good, just like He always does.

What’s Your Mark? Every Moment Counts [Book Review]

I was really excited to be able to review What’s Your Mark?  Every Moment Counts which is a collection of 21 people telling their stories, these people are all making a mark on the world today.  Jeremy Cowart is a celebrity photographer who took pictures and collected their stories to present in the book.  The book is beautifully laid out with gorgeous design and pictures throughout.

There is everyone from people like Claire Diaz-Ortiz who works for Twitter to Mark Burnett who is a television producer.  All of the people interviewed in the book are using their jobs, their lives to make a mark on the world for Jesus.

Throughout the book Cowart has placed large pages with single Bible verses from the Gospel of Mark such as Mark 5:36- Overhearing what they said, Jesus told Him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe” and other verses showing how Jesus made His mark on the world.   In addition there are sets of pages throughout with the Gospel of Mark ending up with the entire Gospel within the stories and pictures.

Not only that but at the end of each persons’ story questions are asked such as, “What are you saying that is making a mark?” and “Is there a problem in your community that you can help solve?”  One thing I wish is there were more questions at the end of each chapter so it could have more discussion and critical thinking.

What I really like is how the book profiles everyday people.  Followers of Jesus who are making a mark in extraordinary ways.  It doesn’t make you feel bad that you aren’t out there doing exactly what they are but shows that there are many different ways to make a mark on the world and everyone started somewhere.
